Nankana Sahib

Nankana Sahib District is a district in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Nankana Sahib is principle town of the district. The district of Nankana Sahib is located about 75 kilometres west from Lahore and about 55 kilometres east from Faisalabad.

The district was formerly part of Sheikhupura District. It was created in 2005 as a new district – this led to five days of protests in the town of Khanqah Dogran, whose residents opposed inclusion in the new district, in which a mob burnt down a police station

The area around Nankana Sahib was formerly a tehsil of Sheikhupura District. In May 2005, the Punjab Government decided to raise up the status of Nankana Sahib to that of a District. as a way of promoting development in the area.

Nankana Sahib District is administratively subdivided into three tehsils these are:

* Nankana Sahib
* Sangla Hill
* Shahkot

On 01-12-2008 Safdarabad was reattached to Sheikhupura District

District Profile

Former chief minister of the Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, raised Nankana Sahib from the level of sub district to district in May 2005. Comprising the subdivisions of Safdarabad (formerly Mandi Dhaban Singh), Sangla Hill and Shahkot, the new district has two National Assembly seats of its own and shares three with Sheikhupura.

Nankana Sahib, the capital of the district, is famous as the birthplace of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak. It is the most sacred Sikh religious site in the world and attracts some 25,000 Sikh pilgrims each year.

The district is also the site for some ambitious development plans including new facilities for visiting pilgrims, a modern hospital and a road link to the Lahore-Faisalabad dual carriageway. Additionally, the Pakistani and Indian governments have announced plans to launch a bus service between Nankana Sahib and Amritsar in Indian Punjab. As it is a newly carved district, its statistics are not yet available.
