Ambreen Butt

Ambreen Butt (born 1969) is a Pakistani artist, born in Lahore, who lives and work in Boston, Massachusetts.

Trained in miniature painting at the National College of Arts Lahore, Butt has lived and worked in the United States since the mid-1990s. Her work stems from the age-old tradition of Persian and Indian miniature painting with a western modernist abstraction and engagement with contemporary themes.

Butt's paintings are rooted in her bicultural identity and retain the intricate, decorative patterning that characterizes Persian and Indian miniature painting. She has updated the medium's painstaking technique with new materials, such as PET film, thread and collage. Her work discards the traditional representation of women in favor of figures dressed in modern western clothes.

She has exhibited at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, Vermont's Fleming Museum, Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Heard Museum in Phoenix.[citation needed]

She was the first recipient of the James and Audrey Foster Prize given by the Institute of Contemporary Art, She also recently received the Maud Morgan Prize from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her other awards include Joan Mitchell Foundation Award for Painters, Canada Council for the Arts and Artist in Residence at the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum in Boston.
